Columbia University Emergency Medical Service (CUEMS) is a student-operated, New York State-certified, basic-life support volunteer ambulance corps.

We provide prehospital emergency medical care, free of charge, to Columbia University's Morningside Heights Campus, and the surrounding area, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Originally known as the Columbia Area Volunteer Ambulance, we have been serving the Columbia Community since 1968. The corps currently has approximately 40 active members and responds to over 1,100 calls per year.

CUEMS is a service of Columbia Public Safety and Columbia Health. We greatly appreciate their unending support.

Interested in Joining?

CUEMS accepts membership applications twice a year, at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Information sessions are announced on our Website, and our application for probationary membership is located in the Join section of our Website.

We seek candidates who are excited about emergency medicine, and welcome those with and without prior EMT certification. For those without EMT certification, CUEMS hosts a class on campus. A merit scholarship is available for a limited number of candidates, chosen by the Executive Board of CUEMS. Please visit our Join section or see below for additional information.

CUEMS will hold information sessions as each semester starts. Attending one of the information sessions is mandatory for those who are interested in joining CUEMS for membership.

EMT certification sponsorship interviews:

CUEMS is looking to sponsor students for EMT certification through Emergency Care Programs this summer. This sponsorship covers the cost of the course excluding course materials such as the textbook, blood pressure cuff, and stethoscope. This sponsorship is applicable only to the course on 711 West 179th Street (the summer course closest to Columbia’s Morningside campus). This course will begin on May 15th and will run Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6 to 10 PM until August 17th.

We will be holding interviews for sponsorship on April 22nd. In order to be eligible to apply, you must (1) be a student at Columbia University, (2) be able to commit four semesters to being a member of CUEMS after completing the EMT certification course, and (3) be able to attend all sessions of the course in their entirety.

Please email cuems@columbia.edu by April 21st at 12 PM to setup an interview. Please include your name, school affiliation, and graduation year in your email. Please also feel free to email us with any questions you may have.

If you are not currently a student at Columbia University, would like to take the course out of pocket, or would like to take another course offered by Emergency Care Programs that better fits your schedule, please visit www.emergencycareny.com.

CUEMS membership information sessions: Closed for the semester. CUEMS does not accept new members during the summer, so please look out for information regarding fall membership near the end of the summer.
